About the Author
Lisa Hoeffner earned a PhD in English with a specialization in rhetoric from the University of Houston. She has taught a wide range of courses over the past twenty-five years, including English composition and rhetoric, reading, critical thinking, American and British literature, world literature, humanities, and business writing. Since 1998, Dr. Hoeffner has served in two positions-professor of English and professor of reading-at McLennan Community College in Waco, Texas.

In addition to her teaching role, Dr. Hoeffner is focusing on curricular redesign in developmental education. She serves as grant director for a Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board grant awarded for work on improvement and innovation in developmental education. With the advent of integrated reading and writing in Texas, she has provided leadership for colleges and universities across the state that are creating integrated reading and writing (INRW) programs. She has designed and led training workshops and webinars to prepare faculty to teach INRW and to help institutions create INRW programs. She has also provided leadership to public school districts implementing INRW programs as college preparatory classes.

Dr. Hoeffner has a passion for teaching and for innovative technologies. She designed and taught her first online freshman composition class in 1999 and has since developed and taught online courses for developmental students. She is thrilled that she is able to bring both passions to bear in her development of Common Places and the Connect IRW: Common Places Master Course.

Dr. Hoeffner is a recipient of several awards, including the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) Excellence Award. She has written and published scholarly articles and poetry, and she has presented her work in developmental education nationally. A native Texan, Dr. Hoeffner enjoys exploring the flora and fauna of regional ecosystems, cooking, and dreaming about living off the grid.

Kent Hoeffner earned a BA from Texas A&M University in College Station, and MDiv from Golden State Seminary in Mill Valley, California, and a PhD from Southern Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. Before working in higher education, Dr. Hoeffner was employed in the mental health field, working primarily with adolescents with social and emotional difficulties. During that time, he also taught adult basic education and GED prepartation classes.

Dr. Hoeffner has served at McLennan Community College since 2001, first as the division director for liberal arts and currently as a professor of philosophy. In addition to teaching introductory courses in philosophy, he has also taught and developed courses in critical thinking and logic. In 2007, he developed McLennan's first online philosophy course, and since then he has continued to develope and teach various online courses.

Recently, Dr. Hoeffner renewed his long-standing involvement in academic advising by joining a group of faculty in a grant-funded intensive advising program focused on improving the success of developmental students. He regularly mentors students who need help in the areas of successful academic behaviors, self-advocacy, and the development of college-level reading and writing skills.

His background in foreign languages and logic contributed to his talents for creating the sentence-combining and grammar units in Common Places, and his expertise in teaching critical thinking and in student mentoring has helped to shape the text. When he is not teaching, advising, or writing, Dr. Hoeffner following the Dallas Cowboys, reading and traveling.

I recieved the book and it already was torn with ...

I recieved the book and it already was torn with writing in it. Now this did not hinder the capabilities of the book in anyway. I'm have just yet to return it and see if they are going to try and charge me for what was already there.

Reminds me of those great Saturday morning Serials!

I've always liked the Seven Soldiers of Victory. They were more my style than the JSA. Sure I enjoyed the JSA, they had cool powers, everyone looked up to them and they saved the world once a month. But the 7SoV saved the world too. What I think I liked about them was the way they saved us. They didn't do it with super-speed,magic rings,Amazonian powers or a miracle pill. The 7SoV didn't really have any super-powers to speak of. Granted the Shining Knight had a flying steed named Winged Victory, a sword from Merlin that could slice through almost anything and a suit of armor proof against at least small arms fire. But that was it, that's all they had in the way of powers to give them an advantage over the bad guys. Unless you count the power of keen wits, iron fists and steely nerve. And heart, this team had an abundance of heart. They routinely went head-to-head with villains who, on paper, should have crushed them.

In this volume for example, they fight the Skull, a Fu- Manchu type mastermind, the wealthiest man in the world, who is "driven by a diabolically cunning, scheming brain that scoffs at justice and toys with murder, moving with a mastery over men and money unmatched by any other mortal!", the Triple Wizards of Wisstark, who throw giants, winged apes,invisible phantoms and blackest sorcery against the 7SoV and the Dummy, known as the Diminutive Desperado, Murderous Mannikin and Servitor of Evil who presides over a vast, world-wide criminal empire. Our heroes know they're up against it, and that makes them fight all the harder. They know they're the underdogs but they prevail in the end because they have heart. That's why I like them so much, they are the Rocky Balboas of super-teams. There are actually 8 of them and they are in brief:

The Crimson Avenger and Wing- Crimson Avenger is also known as Lee Travis, editor and publisher of the newspaper, The Global Leader. He's a two-fisted hyper athletic scrapper aided in his fight against evil by sleep gas capsules and his Chinese sidekick, Wing

The Green Arrow and Speedy- The famous battling bowmen used their mad archery skills to skewer crime. They seldom used trick arrows in these stories, except for their faithful arrow lines.

The Vigilante- A mysterious, kerchiefed, six-gun packing Cowboy hero who spoke in the most wonderfully cliched Western dialogue. He had a vey solid following among fans.

The Shining Knight- A guy named Justin, assistant curator at The Museum, who jousts crime with the strength and nobility of Camelot.

Star-Spangled Kid and Stripesy- Tropical fish enthusiast and rich boy Sylvester Pemberton and his much older sidekick/chauffer Pat Dugan tackle crime by calling out numbered combat maneuvers(Let's use k59, kid!) like they were football plays.

They appeared in Leading Comics and in volume 2 of their Archives they engage in 4 specific missions.

Leading Comics #5-The team wallops the Skull, world's wealthiest and most evil man. The Skull recruits some of the planet's finest criminal minds to steal various objects of wealth and power from around the globe!Should the Skull obtain these objects, it means "an evil destiny for law-abiding mankind." The 7SoV vow to give him what's comiing to him!

Leading Comics #6-A renowned archeologist enlists the 7SoV to recover the lost gold of the Incas so he can use it to help smash the Axis! This is quite an old fashioned adventure story wherein the intrepid band must unravel the meaning behind a cryptic poem to uncover the treasure. They run afoul of volcanoes, hidden caves,savage giant apes, ancient warriors and are manipulated into fighting each other by an "ingenious and diabolical villain who seeks to sow unsuspected death and destruction with a lavish hand."

Leading Comics #7-"Charity begins at home but it doesn't end there! From the star-studded stage of a great auditorium, a generous impulse lures the Seven Soldiers of Victory to an unknown lotus land beyond ice-capped peaks, where strange magic awaits them. And though a myriad of more menacing miracles lies ahead, the daredevil legionnaires, fearing neither man nor magician, plunge boldly forward, as with ever ready wits and matchless courage they answer the summons to mystery and danger from the Wizards of Wisstark!"

He splits the brave crew up into smaller teams and scatters them throughout history. The Retro Super Team collection Vol. 2

This is a well done collection of beautifully reproduced comics featuring the early and almost forgotten super hero team The Seven Soldiers of Victory. Many of these heroes have been all but forgotten and might have been were it not for the Cartoon Network's Justice League Unlimited who breathed new life into them by featuring virtually every hero and villain from the DC Universe.

Bear in mind, these stories are from the early days of comics, not the hard bitten noir-ish heroes of our cynical times. Still, their stories are emjoyable and filled with the sort of wonder that childhood once held in far less cynical times. A worthwhile addition to any serious collector's collection, the 7 Soldiers of Victory are a relic from a time when comics were all about fun and adventure.

I recommend this compilation, and I applaud DC for not letting them be forgotten.

Thar's SNAKE OIL in them thar words!

I am hereby outing myself as a bibliophile + logophile. My house runneth over with books. I am an inveterate student of many subjects; I possess a respectable vocabulary; and many think I am a pretty sharp cookie. I just received this book today, per my order, and took some time to peruse same. Now I'm feeling pretty low on the IQ scale and like I was duped.

The author of this book [106 pages plus brief glossary and index] spends more ink in assuring the reader that the secrets to successful living are just a bit further on in this book ... the next chapter ... then the next ... , than providing any information of substance regarding improving one's vocabulary. There are six pages of instructions for using a dictionary [including the need to know the alphabet forwards and backwards; the fact that the words are to be found by the first letter of the word, then the second, etc; the meaning and usage of guide words, explanation of parts of speech ... and more ... but it's too painful for me to proceed on this subject].

The author refers frequently to one L. Ron Hubbard, [Scientology Founder], and inserts full pages of Hubbard's teachings ... which aren't any more enlightening than the dictionary baby-course. It is the author's [and Hubbard's] position that if we clearly and fully know the meaning of words ... then, having that knowledge, we can now conquer the world. The book is full of glossy, pretentious promises, all based on the suggestion that the reader, upon completing the book and following its instructions, will have the ability to unlock the world's mysteries ... by fully learning word definitions. He would have us believe, I guess, that if I am armed with full understanding of the word, "astronaut," that I could become one; "nuclear physics," [yes, where may I apply?]; philosophy ... ?; mentor ... ?; civil disobedience ... ?; government ... ?; ... Get the picture?

Words ARE powerful. The goal of improving one's vocabulary is laudable, and such learning certainly has its rewards. But this writer only offers marketing hype, preying on our good intentions to learn. What is really being sold within the pages of this book is ... manure [It's under M in the dictionary :-)].

Save your money, folks. This book is full of nonsense - Totally [if you will forgive me] crapola.

I bought this on a whim, I love words and the process of learning more of them.
I figured I would skim through the book and read it at a later date. It didn't work out that way. I read it from start to finish in one sitting. The book explained how to overcome a learning difficulty I have and I am very grateful. If you want to be smarter. Read this book.

The Power of a Dictionary

After reading "The Power of Words" I now understand one of the main causes of illiteracy. If teachers, parents and students would read this book they would fully understand what it means to be self-taught.

As someone who reads dictionaries for fun the title of this book had my full attention. I am happy to reveal that this book does what it promises. I had never heard of some of the techniques used in this book. One interesting method is called "clearing words." To participate in such a procedure all you need is a good dictionary. The author also provides a list of dictionaries he recommends.

If taken seriously this book could help eradicate illiteracy. In a time of information overload some people are being left behind because they have not learned the basics of using a simple dictionary.

Even though I've read thousands of books in my lifetime (over 2000 since 2000) I still come across specialized books that I can't even begin to read. Financial books are especially difficult for me to understand. But put a psychology book in my hands and I'm happy.

So before reading this book I'd actually never had anyone explain how to use a dictionary. I mostly just memorized words and meanings. This book teaches you to go to the next level and gives specific exercises to enhance your learning. This is a book I can recommend to anyone especially college students. May you succeed at anything you do.

GO AHEAD, BINGE.

I’m not saying go out and snort a bunch of cocaine or do anything that’s going to seriously put you or the people around you in danger, obviously.

Binge on the things that bring fulfillment and happiness and satisfaction and make you feel alive. Binge on people who fascinate you and love that wakes you up from monotony. Binge on exploring, both your hometown and the farthest continent. Binge on the time you spend bettering yourself and petting dogs. Binge on picking your grandma’s brain and learning the story of the time she got catfished. Binge on giving, in all senses. Binge on indulging.

We’re told every day from an early age that moderation is key. Count your calories, wait a while before you tell someone you love them, and remember that balance is the path to happiness. While all of those are great in theory, does a lesson taught from someone else’s mistakes resonate just as deeply as the ones you learn yourself? When you binge, you find your own boundaries.

Even if I spend every waking moment attempting to keep my life in balance, I’m going to fuck up. Having already fucked up quite a few times in my life, and having lived to tell the tale, I don’t regret any of it.

I’ve binged plenty of times in my life, sometimes for better, sometimes for worse. Regardless, I indulged. This collection is the result.

the one we've all come to know and love through his videos and his podcasts

As a casual fan of Tyler, I bought this book to support him and to get the inside scope on all the juicy secrets he didn't reveal in his videos. Despite that, I wasn't expecting a lot.

What a refreshing surprise. What I expected to be a book that would slightly elaborate on stories from his videos ended up becoming an engaging, humorous, and emotional rollercoaster. He delves into subjects many people would never touch with a ten foot pole, and he is relentless in his execution. His voice, the one we've all come to know and love through his videos and his podcasts, is embedded within these words in a way that is so natural and strong that you're sucked into the world of "Tyler Oakley" with each sentence you read. Binge gives us the embarrassing relationship stuff, the hilarious of-course-he-would stories, the heartbreaking times, and the simple but resounding life lessons.

Thanks to this, I've set aside my skepticism because as Tyler continuously emphasizes in Binge, in the end, his goal isn't anything else but to be himself. And while this book won't be required reading for AP English Literature anytime soon, it is the epitome of Tyler's presence, and that in itself makes for a fantastic story.

I am so proud of him.

I’ve just read the final sentence of my signed copy of Binge, and put down said book for the first time since picking it up. What better time to write a book review than seconds after finishing the book, with tear-tracks still noticeable on your face and a distinct aching in your heart?

Tyler Oakley is someone who means a lot to me, as his shared video experiences have helped me vastly throughout the (roughly) three years I have been watching his content. Thanks to the wonderful online community that he has helped to create, I have made at least four of my closest friends, three of whom I have met in real life, all thanks to him.

Consequently, it was without question that I ordered Binge. I’m not sure exactly what I was expecting, but I know that it wasn’t this. Never before have I felt so close to him, as though I’ve seen hours of his life on my computer screen -and even had the opportunity to hug him at his London Slumber Party tour stop-, he has truly never shared such intimately personal details of his life with me or any subscriber.

It was a worry of mine that I wouldn’t feel the same connection with Tyler that I usually do whilst reading this book. Thankfully, this was far from the case. Throughout, it felt as if he was speaking to me still, as near as he has always been with videos, closer, even. His unique way of phrasing his sentences, creating inside jokes -perhaps unknowingly- and just talking to us like equals has been built upon and yet stayed true to itself throughout Binge. Not a shred of his distinctive personality has been lost, although it has definitely shone through stronger than ever before.

Now, as always, I am truly proud to call myself one of his people. I love Tyler with all of my heart.

so I thought it would be a good idea to preview the book before he read it ...

I took my 12yo son to see Tyler at his book signing. He's not a HUGE fan, but knows him primarily from some collab videos with other YouTubers. I haven't watched a lot of his stuff myself, so I thought it would be a good idea to preview the book before he read it and I'm glad I did because I was not comfortable having him read the whole thing. We are not a prudish family by any means at all, and I know he could go out there and find all of this info online, but I'm just not quite ready to *personally* hand him a book that teaches him how to use Grindr, have anonymous sex and talks about "getting dick".

That said, I enjoyed the book. I am compromising with my kiddo and letting him read some selected chapters. I feel a little weird doing that because it's not typically my style, but I think there are some valuable lessons and funny stories in the book that he will enjoy. He can read the rest when he cares enough to go snooping for it (I'm not stupid). ;)

About the Author
Robert G. Gallager is a Professor Emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and one of the world's leading information theorists. He is a Fellow of the US National Academy of Engineering, the US National Academy of Sciences, and his numerous awards and honours include the IEEE Medal of Honour (1990) and the Marconi Prize (2003). He was awarded the MIT Graduate Student Teaching Award in 1993, and this book is based on his 20 years of experience of teaching this subject to students.

Excellent Textbook

Stochastic Processes: Theory for Applications is very well written and does an excellent job of bridging the gap between intuition and mathematical rigorousness at the first-year graduate engineering school level. The book is a combination of the material from two MIT courses: (6.262) Discrete Stochastic Process and (6.432) Stochastic Processes, Detection, and Estimation. Because of this, the book shares much in common with Prof. Gallager's previous textbook: Discrete Stochastic Processes (ISBN-13: 978-0792395836 published 1995). I would not recommend to those interested only in this sub-topic - and who already own DSP - to purchase this new textbook as not much new will be gained. Nevertheless, the new inductee into the stochastic process world will be well served by this excellent update.

The best intro to stochastic processes available, bar none [and I have seen a lot of them] - also a companion to his GREAT, FREE course on the MIT Open Course website. If you buy this book, plan to do the course - if you don't you are missing out on a massive amount of information.

A rising publishing industry star trashes his life during a bender in this intense but callow confessional. Clegg, a literary agent with William Morris Endeavor, tells the story of a two-month crack binge in which he smoked away his literary agency partnership, his $70,000 bank account, 40 pounds (he's forever cutting new holes in his belt to cinch it to his wasting frame), and his relationship with his devoted long-suffering boyfriend. There's crazed excess and tawdry sex, but also a sharply etched portrait of the addict's mindset: the veering between paranoia and a compulsive sociability with the random crackheads he picks up to party with; the shrinkage of the planning horizon to the search for the next hit; the bliss of the high (the warmest, most tender caress... then, as it recedes, the coldest hand); the bender's unstoppable acceleration until, like a cartoon character running off a cliff, it has nothing left to sustain it. The author's efforts to impart psychological depth to his addiction—he writes of wan collegiate debauches and a childhood complex about urinating—are less convincing; it's clear that the binge will end when his money runs out. In this chilling debut, Clegg has written a serious and compelling, if somewhat detached, addition to the subgenre of "addiction memoirs." Clegg's tight, elegant prose, earnest tone, and meticulous attention to detail call up a fairy tale world brutally transformed into a monstrous hell. While the New York Times Book Review and the Times considered the book tedious and clichéd, their comments appeared to be directed more toward the genre as a whole, whose repetitive descriptions of substance abuse are "amply familiar to anyone who has ever watched a single episode of Behind the Music on VH-1" (Times). Of course, reviewer David Carr has written his own tale of addiction, The Night of the Gun (***1/2 Nov/Dec 2008). Most critics, however, agreed with the Globe and Mail, which called Clegg's unflinching, intelligent, and grim account "a skillfully conjured, slow-motion train wreck from which it's impossible to look away."

Clegg was a partner in a thriving literary agency and was involved in a long-term, loving relationship when he succumbed to cocaine addiction. For two months, he went on a crack binge that emptied his bank account, ruined his business, destroyed his relationship, and nearly took his life. Clegg alternates between recollections of his slow and steady decline into addiction and his youthful discovery that he was gay, humiliated by his father's taunts and his mother's distance. As his addiction escalated, he frantically chased the high, endlessly starting over after binges of drinking and smoking crack, running away from every intervention effort by his family or his lover, indulging in anonymous sex with a string of fellow users. When his disheveled appearance prompts a hotel to reject his attempt to register, he realizes he has fallen into “the purgatory between citizen and nobody, between fine young man and bum” and begins a slow and painful recovery. Surpassed expectations...not one hint of sentimentality

The narrative voice in Clegg's memoir is unusually strong, making it a real page turner. Several times I feared that he would, after some particularly vivid moment in the book, begin to lead the reader up the twelve yawn inducing steps toward recovery. But he seems to have known that choosing such a path in the middle of such a wild descent into hell would result in the kind of cloying, predictable, prostration at the altar of belief, which would have rendered his brilliant observations inert. But I'm happy to say that this never happened. And as good looking as Clegg is, the drug-induced paranoia he navigates had me thanking my lucky stars that I never had the opportunity of getting high with him. I'm eager to see how he handles recovery in his new book, "Ninety Days."

What you like

Portrait of an Addict as a Young Man is one of the best books I have ever read, it grabbed me by the balls and wouldn't let go until the end! Bill Clegg doesn't try to impress us that he is another Proust, but he does impress never-the-less, with honesty and humility, sharing in raw edged and well written detail the degradation of childhood, and dashed successes of adulthood due to drugs. Having had a rugged time of it through much of life, I sought refuge from pain for a time in self-medication--this is not exactly like addiction, but many details are the same. Bill Clegg not only helped me understand myself better but he reminded me I'm not alone, and for those reasons I am very grateful, and look forward to his next book. Some have criticized the quality of the author's writing. I object. They criticized van Gogh in the beginning, his work was not art they said. But they were wrong.

The book, perhaps, was a true account of an addict's spiraling life. However, I'm not sure whether the point was to not do drugs or that all of us have problems. Not everyone deals with their issues by trying to "escape" reality and treating those who love us like dirt.
