An extremely funny and very objective look at life as a 'ski bum.' This book is impossible to put down so be prepared to get funny looks if you are reading on the bus or when you emerge from the loo! Chris' descriptive powers are accurate and subliminal. His self disarming style connects with any reader who has found themselves in any situation outside our comfort zones.

1.2 million Britons go skiing every year and most of them come back. Around thirty die through misadventure. Only a dozen or so are killed by avalanches, a few from crashing into immovable objects or each other, however the majority die in what are known as 'alcohol related incidents' - usually by freezing to death. This book is my skiing memoir and includes one fatal avalanche, a few crashes and numerous alcohol related incidents. It documents my transition from a city-living adman to a garage-dwelling ski bum and rookie ski instructor over four ski seasons in the French alpine town of Morzine. More importantly, it documents the price I paid for living my dream.
I also try to answer some difficult questions: what constitutes a 'proper job', what do ski bums do in the summer and what does being a 'good skier' actually mean? I explore skiing phobias and exorcise a few demons of my own, primarily a morbid fear of avalanches and an infamous run called the Swiss Wall.
I describe some of the people, from different nations, who have been my guests along with their domestic and gastronomic habits, and some notable French traits. I recall some memorable skiing adventures with the Ski Club of Great Britain and some of the guides and instructors I've skied with - some of whom were even more mentally unstable than me.
Currently the names of those mentioned in this book have not been changed, but they probably should be, in order to protect against the loss of friendships and possible litigation. However, everything described in this book, to the best of my recollection, actually happened.

Compulsory reading for any middle-aged man, or anybody who knows one.

I only bought this book as I ski and know Morzine well, so my expectations weren't that high, but it truly is a really enjoyable read. Chris's book is about what most of us middle aged men only dream about: escaping and turning a dream into reality, although that reality may not be quite what you expected. Laugh out loud funny in places (read in private - I annoyed my wife) and quite moving in others, I pretty much guarantee you won't be able to put it down. And don't be put off if you don't ski or know the Alps. If you are a middle-aged man, or aspire to be one, or have been one, or are (or were) married to one, you will definitely enjoy this book. If you really are a middle aged man and suspect you might be having a mid-life crisis, forget any self-help books. Read Chris's book and either put up or shut up!

'Drop in' - you'll enjoy it!

A really entertaining and easy read. For anyone who's been on skiing trips to the Alps, this will transport you back to those heroic days on the slopes and 'all-conquering' nights in the bar... and make you realise what your chalet host really thought of you! Thankfully, the witty, sometimes acidly funny observations are directed as much at the author as his guests, as he reflects incredibly honestly on the frailties and emotions which contributed to and accompanied him on the journey into and out of a mid-life crisis. The story of the 'journey' has enough reflective quality to make you think - but happily, it's mixed in with lots of snow, lots of skiing and lots of laughs. Chris thinks he sold his soul to an ad agency, but he's clearly still in possession of it - and keen that you should take a look. I recommend you do - you'll enjoy it.

Very rare that someone is willing to hold a mirror to himself and describe everything he sees, not just the good bits.

Well done.

Hope our paths cross in the future, and that Chris comes to Zell one day to see how exactly alike are the demons (and the guardian angels without whom I would never be writing this review!) and spankers like me!

I've been a huge fan of the Goosebumps books ever since I was younger (I'm 19 now, and although I rarely read them anymore, nothing is more nostalgic for me than digging through my box of Goosebumps books and flipping through them).
Having said that, I must say that the Goosebumps Graphix can probably only be appreciated by fans like myself. Anyone picking up these books without being able to appreciate them as Goosebumps adaptations would most likely find them cheesy, short, and messy.
I've only read #3 (Scary Summer), and here is my review:
"Revenge of the Lawn Gnomes" was well-done graphically, although the first several pages seemed too rushed and and it only started showing a real plot about halfway through.
"Ghost Beach" was by far the best of the three, combining very dark and appropriate artistry with a decent adaptation of the original material, although the plot twist at the end wasn't as well-adapted as it could have been.
"The Horror of Camp Jellyjam", one of the more quirky books of the original series, was my least favorite here. The drawing style seemed to be ripped right out of a newspaper comic strip, and the artist just didn't seem to put too much thought into properly adapting the plot and fleshing out the frames (many of the backgrounds were left blank, other than the occasional tree or stick figure).
It was nice to see short biographies of the three authors at the end of the book, showcasing their past works and adaptation methods.
Overall, I think the Goosebumps Graphix series is a well-though-out idea, and I really enjoyed seeing the different writing and art styles depicted in each story. I hope to see more books like this in the future.

Great books for non readers

My son does not like to read, however, the graphix novels really grab his attention and keep it, probably because it is more like a comic book. He can't put them down and that makes me very happy!

My daughter loved it

I purchased three of the Goosebumps Graphix books for my seven year old. She’s really gotten into some of the other graphic type books like Baby Mouse, Smile/Sisters, etc., so I thought with that combined with her interest in anything spooky she may enjoy these. She read all three in one day and even read one twice. She said that they were scary but they didn’t seem to give her nightmares or be over the top. Great books for those who are still a little young for the traditional Goosebumps books.

With Peter Jackson's King Kong remake due in December, this boisterous, chest-thumping biography of film pioneer Cooper (1893–1973), producer-director of the original 1933 film, is certain to attract attention. Vaz (The Art of the Incredibles; etc.) captures the mythic magic of Cooper's cinematic creations, and Cooper himself emerges as an equally legendary character. He attended the U.S. Naval Academy, but left before graduating and joined the 1916 hunt for Pancho Villa. A 1921 newspaper article tallied his WWI experiences: "All Warsaw is at the feet of the American ace who was twice shot down from the clouds, twice endured the squalor of prison camps, twice was reported dead." Cooper and his partner Ernest Schoedsack traveled the world shooting documentaries, scoring a box-office hit with the Oscar-nominated Chang (1927) before moving on to dramatic filmmaking. After "human dynamo" Cooper took over as RKO studio chief, he joined the WWII Flying Tigers and received a U.S.A.F. brigadier general promotion. Launching Cinerama in 1952, he was awarded an honorary 1953 Oscar. An experienced writer on movie special effects and special-effects movies has put together a readable, frequently gripping biography of Merian C. Cooper (1893-1973), whose exploits sometimes put one in mind of Indiana Jones but who is best known as producer--director, with Ernest B. Schoedsack, of King Kong. Before that cinematic milestone, he had been a pilot in World War I and a POW in Germany. His career began with wildlife films that involved frequent journeys to remote regions and, occasionally, acute danger. Nor did he rest on his laurels after King Kong. He returned to flying in World War II, undertaking combat missions when nearly 50 years old as chief of staff of the Flying Tigers in China. After the war, he returned to Hollywood as a senior executive at RKO. The book offers abundant facts, adequate prose, a lavish selection of photographs, and remarks by a panoply of famous interviewees. An altogether appealing addition for film-history collections, even if Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson weren't about to release his own King Kong. Roland Green

A man's man.

For film buffs, this book is a must. Merian C. Cooper was an unbelievable "real life" character that no one has heard of. You couldn't make his life up. A World war One bomber pilot, who received 60 medals for valor, An Adventurer, who made African adventure films and documentaries. He was a founder of Pan American airways. As a director his first feature film was King Kong. A Studio Exec (RKO-MGM) who formed a partnership with Director John Ford and produced ALL of his best known westerns including the Searchers. In World War Two he re-enlisted in the Army Air Corps to become chief of Staff of Chinault's Flying Tigers and General MacArthur in the Phililpine campaign. Following the war he returned to film and the studio that made him. I can't recommend enough. This guy was the James Cameron of the 40's.

Although its authorship has never been conclusively proven, The Heptameron is generally accepted as the work of Marguerite de Navarre, Queen of Navarre and the sister of Francois I. The Heptameron, which has parallels to both Chaucer's Canterbury Tales and Boccaccio's Decameron, presents a collection of some seventy very short stories told by five gentleman and five lady travellers who find themselves stranded in an abbey. This is an amusing "companion" to the Decameron - though shorter. While I have read both, if you only read one, I would recommend the Decameron. It has more depth and is better written. If you like it and want more that's in a similar vein, then read this. Neither are heavy reads and both have an interesting group of participants (they aren't really characters) who tell stories for their own daily amusement. This is another book I read in installments while reading other more plot driven books.

I am a teacher and needed this item A.S.A.P. because I had just moved to Ohio from out of state and was tutoring a pre-calculus student. Painfully intense, deliciously sweet

Oh, this is a really good set. Although erotica written in this genre can be trite, cheesy, or just a throwaway snack with a few kink words and terms, these stories dive deeper into the power dynamic of DD/lg. Sometimes there is sweetness and a painfully gentle adoration, and sometimes there is the rawness of punishment and release. Always, though, is that deep dark voice, the command and power of it, and the opportunity to just be soft and young and vulnerable under that spell. And it's hot, and it's safe, even when it's scary. If this is the game that gets you going, you cannot do better.

Whatever general flavor of Daddy you're looking for, this has it, from supportive and sweet Daddy to wonderfully wicked Daddy. The writing has a very authentic and down-to-earth voice, even though this is decidedly sexy fantasy fodder. It's not purple prose, and it's refreshing for not being such. Because of the "realness" of the narrator's voice, the reader easily taps into the story, slips into being Daddy's little girl. And let me be frank, Daddy as narrator does a great job of making the role of his little girl extremely appealing. So, no matter if you're feeling good, or good and naughty (wink-wink, nudge-nudge) these are stories to return to again and again!

This is one of the best writers of erotica I've ever run across. He makes you feel loved and wanted and then boom the sexy hits you!
