From the publishers of Motorcycle Consumer News, Shifting Gears at 50 is a one-of-a-kind motorcycling manual for returning and late-entry riders, essentially anyone 40 years old and up who’s looking to hit the road on two wheels. Author Philip Buonpastore, a motorcycle journalist and retired US Air Force photographer, helps readers gear up to get back on a motorcycle (or get on one for the first time).
In Part 1, Becoming a Motorcyclist,” Buonpastore discusses the basics of buying the right bike, gear, and equipment and getting the bike up to speed. The book continues with a good overview of learning to ride, the importance of taking a road course, venturing out on the first ride, and extending rides to long-distance jaunts. Throughout Part 1 are sidebars by riding- safety instructor and expert Walt Fulton, offering sound advice on safety precautions and execution for every leg of the new and returning rider’s journey.
The author emphasizes what older riders should be aware of and which factors can affect their rides. Adding lots of great firsthand advice are humorous and helpful stories collected by the author and related by returning riders at various ages, from their late 30s to 60s.
In Part 2, Buonpastore shares five of his favorite travelogues covering his long-distance tours around the US, from the American South to the west coasts. This section is illustrated by over 100 of the author’s breathtaking photographs of the various locations he toured on his bike.
The foreword to the book is provided by best-selling motorcycle author David Hough (author of I-5 Press’s Proficient Motorcycling and Mastering the Ride). Hough writes, If you’re getting into today’s motorcycling at an age your doctor would describe as middle aged’ or senior,’ do you yourself a clever favor and read Phil’s book.”

Hough helps you hone your riding skills and avoid dangerous pitfalls in this new edition of his best-selling manual Proficient Motorcycling.
The first edition of Proficient Motorcycling has been the top-selling motorcycling book since its publication in 2000, and it is heavily endorsed by motorcycling experts. With step-by-step instructions, detailed diagrams and photographs, and humorous anecdotes, Hough answers these and other critical questions to help both new riders and old campaigners enjoy their rides.

Not Quite as Good as the Hype
By YoloMike
Given the rave reviews, I had very high expectations for this book. While most of the important basics are covered, the book suffers from poor organization, repetitiveness, and undue wordiness. You have to wade through a lot of prefatory verbiage to get the key points, and that makes this difficult to use as a reference. I assume this is because the material was originally written for a magazine column, where chattiness and longwindedness are virtues. I was hoping for a very thorough, detailed, and efficient presentation, and there is room for improvement on those scores here. Most of the photos and diagrams are good, and the advice is all sound, but what is needed is a rational and ruthless editor. I'll keep looking. 3.5 stars.

Perfect title
By Kindle Customer
I have ridden bikes for over 40 years, learning on a small 3 speed with a clutch at age 9. I learned so much, things I hadn't even thought of thinking about. Now in my fifties riding a large cruiser, I am much more concerned about safety with today's increased traffic and distracted drivers. Like good safety equipment, this is a worthwhile investment to spend the time to read this. It may save your life. Not the most exciting title, but it's exactly what this book is. I have read other books on cycling, but none have the level of detail of all the physics and forces that are behind the art of riding a motor with 2 wheels down the road. True confidence on the road comes from knowledge and experience. This book gives you knowledge, and using the info will help keep you safer as you rack up the miles gaining experience.

Highly recommended
By Scott
This book is fantastic.
The entire book is essentially a discussion on the dangers of motorcycle riding and gave me tips on how to get myself out of bad situations and more importantly, how to avoid them in the first place. Everything from weather, road conditions, other motorists, techniques, riding/control positions, unexpected situations, and health dangers such as hypothermia, dehydration and heatstroke.
The subject matter is not presented in a negative or lecture-like format. It felt much more like asking an experienced friend for advice.
By not being shy about discussing topics I would rather not think about, the author made me realise there is a lot more to motorcycle riding than what I learned at the MSF classes and forced me to ask myself "Are you sure you want to get a motorcycle?"
The apprehension about buying my first motorcycle has been reduced and I have an increased desire and determination to learn how to control and operate a motorcycle with a high level of proficency.
The author recognized fun is an important part of riding and gave plenty of tips on how proficient riding and preparation increases the fun to be had.
This book was exactly what I needed.
