Wonderful Insight into One of the Greatest Trombonists in History
By Kevin
Bill Watrous is, quite simply, among the greatest Jazz trombonists in history. The study of his lifetime of work is essential to any student of the trombone, and this book is one of the best, if not the best, source for understanding the theoreticical backbone of how (and why) he does what he does.
As some other reviewers have mentioned, in the beginning of the book Watrous and Raph indicate that this is for the advanced or professional player. I have found this to be partially true in the sense that most of the book covers concepts that a player could spend all their lives trying to master and never quite perfect, however, I do believe that being introduced to these concepts as a novice is uniformly a good thing. I received this book during my sophomore year in high school and I was able to use some of the concepts in it to improve both my technical mastery of the horn, as well as my vocabulary as an improviser.
What I will caution, however, is that this is not a "how to" manual. Instead, it is more like a masterclass on what Watrous thinks about when he is playing and how he practices at home. In this way, parts of the book read more like Watrous's philosophy on trombone than they look like exercises to practice. In this book's case, I think that is a good thing, as exercises can sometimes fail to capture the full scope of what someone does and why they do it.
Overall, very good book, but prepare to approach it months and years at a time, not days or weeks.

Excellent exercises from two masters of the trombone
By Thomas Boates
I owned this book many years ago and I'm glad I found another copy. Excellent material for flexibility and the technique of "fretting" on the trombone. Also excellent upper register stuff as well.

Trombonisms: A high-level overview of modern technique
By A Customer
Watrous' book provides an overview of several trombone techniques for the modern player. He touches on playing fast, alternate slide positions, using overtones to develop both diatonic and chordal lines, playing high notes, and multi-phonics. All of these are techniques where Bill Watrous is the undisputed king!
Even though the forward of the book indicates that the information is geared toward the advanced or professional player, most players posessing reasonable ability will have already encountered and have some facility with these techniques. I would have also preferred to see more musical examples of each of the techniques. Often there may be 3 or 4 examples of the topic, followed by a challenge to the reader to come up with his own examples and practice them in all 12 keys. As such, each topic is covered in only about 2 pages, making the book relatively small. Also, there is a recording included of Bill playing the provided examples, but it is an old-fashioned, flimsy-style record. I haven't had a turn-table in 10 years, so I doubt I'll ever listen to it!
All in all, though, the book does provide some insight to how Watrous approaches his technical playing, and did provide some tips about the techniques that I had not previously thought of. I also liked how the text is presented in a positive style, implying that if you follow the examples listed and practice often, you will be able to master the technique. Still, though, I have no dilusions of ever sounding like Bill Watrous!
I would recommend the book to any player wishing to increase technical skills on the slide trombone, but be prepared more for an overview and less of an in-depth tutorial.
