This is a great little book with lots of reenforcement for positive thinkers. Many of the articles are real-life examples that demonstrate the importance and value of maintaining a positive attitude. I purchased additional copies and passed them along to family members. Everyone has loved the book. Given these difficult times and all the bad news, I use mine as a source for a daily dose of positive thinking.

One of the best books on the subject. Reveals how Catholics got their filthy hands on the gospel and perverted it, killing off their adversaries and telling lies to cover it up.

Basic Introduction for the Lay Reader
By Edward J. Barton
Taking the reader from the first days in Jerusalem after Easter to the fall of Rome and the advent of the Dark ages around 600 CE, Chadwick covers nearly 600 years in 250 short, well written pages. Chadwick endeavors to cover a lot of ground, and does so fairly well. Whether discussing the many early Church schisms and heresies - Arius, Pelagious, Donatus, the Monophysites, Origen, and many of the other Church Fathers - such as Agustine of Hippo, Ireneaus, Justin Martyr, Jerome, Clement and the early popes, you will be quickly but effectively introduced to many of the characters, issues and events that shaped the development of the Church.

Chadwick also dives into the history of the liturgy, the development of the structure, the arts and the music of the early church, and provides a balanced view of the challenges faced during these formative years. Focusing on the politics as well as the practical, Chadwick will provide the reader with a view that promotes the traditions of the church to present day - such as the episcopacy, with challenges as the "real" development of the Bishop of Rome becoming first among equals and then the Pope derived more from politics than theology. A good read, a quick read, and a good basic introduction to a 2000 year old institution.

Somewhat outdated, but still an excellent introduction
By David Withun
Some of the scholarship here is a bit outdated (for instance, the contention that Eusebius of Caesara and St. Epiphanius of Salamis were proto-iconoclasts has been thoroughly dismantled in recent years) but this is still the standard and the classic text on early Christian history, covering roughly the period of the Apostolic Fathers (late first century) to the Seventh Ecumenical Council (eight century) and introducing all of the major themes of Church history along the way, including theology, liturgy, art, major figures, etc. The focus throughout is primarily on Western Christianity but the author is also familiar with Eastern practice and generally takes a balanced approached. If anyone is interested in learning more about Church history but has very little knowledge of it already, this book is an excellent place to start.

Review
"As with nearly every DK book I've ever read, this collection by Billy Wrecks and Danny Graydon (with a foreword by comics writing icon, Roger Stern) succeeds in being exhaustive yet condensed, providing the reader with access to just about everything that has touched Doctor StephenStrange's life since he became the Master of the Mystic Arts. Hardcoverwith gilt-edged pages (a nice touch!), this oversized book takes readers on an encyclopedic tour of Strange's origins, his allies, hisassociates, his enemies, and the notable turning points in his life.
"Each page is filled with artwork culled from the different decades of the publication of DOCTOR STRANGE. The clashing, divergent styles puttogether on the same page add to the notion that the world can be seenin differing ways through Strange's eyes, almost as if each era was awindow into a different dimension." -- RJ Carter

The saga of the Sorcerer Supreme...with one major flaw
By L. W. Swint
"I am known as Dr. Strange--Sorcerer Supreme of this material realm..."

'"Supreme"? Is then...no mortal magician stronger than you?"

"No..."

Doctor Strange and Lilia the Gypsy Queen.
Adapted from the story, "Portal to the Past," by Steve Englehart, Mike Friedrich, and Frank Brunner,
originally published in "Marvel Premiere" #12, 1973.

"The Mysterious World of Doctor Strange" is a hardcover book offering an overview of the most unique Marvel Comics superhero, Doctor Steven Strange, "Master of the Mystic Arts!" It is the first time such a volume has been produced for the character created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, and covers the length and breadth of his extraordinary exploits: from his early days as a former doctor of medicine, his spiritual resurrection as the prized pupil of the wise wizard revered as the Ancient One, to his contemporary status as Earth's Sorcerer Supreme, protector of the natural and the supernatural on our precious planet.

This lesser book of the Vishanti is divided into 7 chapters:

"Strange Magic:"
This introductory section of the book serves as an abridged biography of Steven Strange, providing brief glimpses into his amazing adventures as he came to become Earth's Mystic Master.

"Side by Side:"
At 44 pages, this is the longest chapter in the 176 paged book. While Doctor Strange's special title of Sorcerer Supreme causes him to be involved in magical missions only he can master, they bring him into contact not just with individuals of the supernatural worlds but also encounters with Earth's ever growing, ever evolving superhero community. Over time, the wizard of other realities came to build lasting relationships with many remarkable men and women. This chapter details the friends and allies Doctor Strange has gained in his career. They include: The Ancient One, the mystic mentor to Doctor Strange. Wong, the "manservant, confidant, and housekeeper" to the master mage's unique home, the Sanctum Sanctorum. Clea, Doctor Strange's great love, the beautiful sorceress from the Dark Dimension. Spider-man, an unlikely but recurring comrade in arms to the "Master of the Mystic Arts" in many an adventure. Doctor Doom, the grim and megalomanical monarch of the European nation Latveria, has been an occasional ally to Doctor Strange, although he is one not to be fully trusted. The Sorcerer Supreme has also allied himself with other super heroes. For example, he is the founder and leader of the team called "The Defenders," whose original members included the incredible Hulk and Namor the Submariner. The team would later include such characters as the cosmic spacefarer, the Silver Surfer; the Valkyrie, warrior woman of Asgard; Wolverine, the adamantium-boned mutant; and the martial arts master known as Iron Fist. Doctor Strange is also a member of the mysterious team called the "The Illuminati," which consists of Steven Strange; Reed Richards, leader of the Fantastic Four; Prince Namor; Professor Charles Xavier of the X-Men: T'Challa, the Black Panther, King of the African land of Wakanda; Black Bolt, leader of the Inhumans; and Tony Stark alias Iron Man, the organizer of this secret society, formed to secretly protect the Earth. In recent years, Doctor Strange has also become a member of "The New Avengers," a branch of the original super team, "The Avengers." Among its diverse rank of heroes are: Spider-man; Wolverine; Ben Grimm, one quarter member of the Fantastic Four; Luke Cage the Power Man; Jessica Jones, Luke Cage's wife and a super powered private investigator; and Carol Danvers, the cosmic powered heroine known as Captain Marvel.

"Enemy Mine:"
This chapter delves into the mystical villains Doctor Strange has battled in defense of Earth. Some of his major foes include: Nightmare, shadowy lord of the realm of dreams; Baron Karl Mordo, disgraced ex-apprentice of the Ancient One, and archenemy of Doctor Strange; and the Dread Dormammu, demonic nemesis from the Dark Dimension. The "Master of the Mystic Arts" has also battled such malevolent enemies as Mephisto, Marvel Comics' crimson incarnation of "the Devil;" Umar the Unrelenting, the sinister sister of Dormammu; and Dracula, the bloodthirsty lord of vampires.

"The All Powerful:"
As Sorcerer Supreme of Earth, Doctor Strange has encountered entities that exist on levels beyond the mortal concepts of good and evil. This chapter describes these awe-inspiring figures. There is Eternity, a being that encompasses the entirety of space and time, envisioned as the universe itself in human form. The Vishanti, a trinity of cosmic beings whose history form the foundation of the title and responsibility, Sorcerer Supreme. The Living Tribunal, the golden, three headed embodiment and guardian of cosmic balance in the myriad realms of the multiverse. These and other sentient cosmic forces have the power to affect the concept humanity calls reality on an inter-galactic and inter-dimensional scale, and part of Doctor Strange's immense task as Sorcerer Supreme is to represent and protect the humble world of Earth from entities whose vision transcends the boundaries of our universe.

"Mystic Realms:"
Doctor Strange's adventures have taken him far beyond the deep blue seas and vast continents of the Earth. His excursions have had the seer of the supernatural enter worlds that are not worlds and dimensions where dreams are made real. This chapter attempts to describe the almost indescribable, the planes of existence that the Sorcerer Supreme regularly explores as guardian of our cherished planetary home. Starting from his Sanctum Sanctorum, a New York victorian brownstone which is more than just a spacious home to the master of magic, Doctor Strange can enter such other dimensional realities as the Dark Dimension of Dormammu, a domain without form or structure; the ethereal realm of Eternity, which is just an aspect of the entity's totality; or the unworld of Ditkopolis, a dimension that pays artistic tribute to the co-creator of Doctor Strange, Steve Ditko.

"Spellbound:"
This section of the book describes Doctor Strange's relationship with the power of magic, his bond with the mystical forces of the Earth and beyond, and his spiritual link to such magical entities as the Vishanti, as well as Cyttorak, Farallah, Ikonn, Raggador, and Watoomb. These cosmic connections form the basis of some of the spells the "Master of the Mystic Arts" invokes, like "the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak," the Roving Rings of Raggador," and the "Winds of Watoomb."

"Objects of Enchantment:"
The book's final chapter, these pages describe the invaluable mystical tomes and talismans Doctor Strange has that aid him in his charge as defender of Earth. It offers interesting background histories of these remarkable relics, which include: the Eye of Agamotto, the magical amulet that is the special ornament of Doctor Strange's mystical uniform; the scarlet Cloak of Levitation, which gives the Sorcerer Supreme the gift of flight; and the Book of the Vishanti, the great volume of magical knowledge, spells and incantations compiled by former masters of white magic.

As written by Billy Wrecks, Nick Jones, and Danny Graydon, "The Mysterious World of Doctor Strange" is a fascinating, intriguing and entertaining exploration of the "strange tales" of the great comic character that is Doctor Strange. It reveals many concepts and background facts that even this long time fan of the character did not know, like: Baron Mordo's middle name is 'Amadeus!' Or the distinctive round window designed atop Doctor Strange's Sanctum Sanctorum is called "The Window of Worlds," and "is decorated with a pattern of the Anomaly Rue, the Seal of the Vishanti." This reviewer had read of Mr. Ditko's fondness for the work of Will Eisner and his classic comic creation "The Spirit," and long considered the unique window from Doctor Strange's home to be an homage to the similar window Mr. Eisner drew on "The Spirit's" home in the character's secret hide-away in Wildwood Cemetery. The added information about the Sorcerer Supreme's home is a rewarding bit of trivia.

The book is also richly illustrated with a multitude of images from the mystic master's continuing comic chronicles. Some of these dramatic drawings are reproduced in a larger size than when they were originally published in the comics which add to their impact. But this reviewer finds a major fault with this otherwise enjoyable tome. While paging through this book, I'm sure many of its readers will be interested in learning more about Doctor Strange and his comic adventures, desiring to read the original stories touched upon in this volume. Most unfortunately, this book provides no 'suggested further reading' section, something that would guide curious readers to further expand their possible enjoyment of the character's imaginative comic experiences. This is a truly regrettable editorial choice by DK Publishing.

Despite that flaw, "The Mysterious World of Doctor Strange" is a high quality publication. Featuring a stunning painted cover by illustrator Alex Ross, a sewn binding and even gold embossed end pages, giving the book that much more of a magical touch, it is a book any Doctor Strange fan will be happy to add to their library.

It comes recommended by this reviewer. Enjoy and may the Vishanti watch over you!

Usually get most things at Amazon, but got this at a local Comic Book Store. I really liked it. Has enough information to get you caught up before the movie and covers a lot of details I had no idea about and will keep you from having to read 200 comics to find out!

Delivering Value with BIM: A whole-of-life approachFrom Routledge

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a global phenomenon which is gaining significant momentum across the world. Currently there is little information on how to realise and monitor benefits from implementing BIM across the life-cycle of a built environment asset. This book provides a practical and strategic framework to realise value from implementing BIM by adapting Benefit Realisation Management theory. It presents an approach for practitioners aiming to implement BIM across the life-cycle of built environment assets, including both buildings and infrastructure.

Additionally, the book features:

  • wide-ranging information about BIM, the challenges of monitoring progress towards benefit goals and the greater context of implementation;
  • a set of dictionaries that illustrate: how benefits can be achieved, what the benefit flows are and the enabling tools and processes that contribute to achieving and maximising them;

From Publishers Weekly
Linden and Paroli, mothers who met in the hospital when their preemies were born, and neonatologist Doron present a comprehensive guidebook for parents whose babies are born prematurely. One out of 10 babies in the U.S. is born early, but in half of these cases the mothers have no known risk of giving birth prematurely, so they can't prepare for the whirlwind of unexpected events and emotions they will experience in the neonatal unit. The authors fulfill the need for information with remarkable clarity, offering answers to a multitude of questions. Divided into four sections (Before Birth, In the Hospital, A Life Together and Other Considerations), the book covers risk factors, the first day, the first week, surgery, taking the baby home and many other topics. Each section contains personal observations from parents of preemies, insightful comments from "the doctor's perspective" and information on procedures, equipment, common problems and other issues. While medical information is presented in detail, the book maintains a personal, reassuring tone, explaining that, though their organs and body functions are immature, most preemies are basically healthy. Since parents can't always plan ahead for the possibility of a preemie, this book provides a valuable crash course and serves as a useful tool for communicating with medical staff. Includes a helpful resource guide and glossary. (Aug.)

From Library Journal
Although one out of ten children born in this country is born prematurely, until now there has never been an authoritative, practical, and encouraging reference tool for their parents. This book is just that, a work in the "Dr. Spock" genre that will prove to be a bible for parents of "preemies." Linden and Emma Paroli, who each have children born prematurely, have joined forces with Mia Weschler Doron, a physician whose specialty is neonatology, to produce the book they wish had been available to them when they needed it. The authors cover myriad issues, ranging from a discussion of risk factors for prematurity, through possible and probable problems in the newborn's life and early years, to long-term prognoses. They do this primarily in a question-and-answer format, with lots of accompanying information. Their book should handsomely meet the needs of families dealing with premature infants and in fact is certain to be a blessing to them. Enthusiastically recommended for all public library collections.DLinda M.G. Katz, Florence A. Moore Lib. of Medicine, MCP Hahnemann Univ., Philadelphia

A must-have for parents of preemies
By A Customer
What a great book! It has answered all the questions my husband and I have had about our premature baby. All the information is practical and straightforward without being negative or intimidating. The book is organized in chronological order, from before birth to bringing your baby home and beyond. It also includes useful resources for parents. We wish the book had been published when our preemie was born, but we're still finding it an invaluable resource today.

1st Time Mom of a 32wk Preemie
By Coreylyn
I can't say enough about this book! What a help it has been for keeping my sanity and getting me through one of the most difficult times in my life. I was admitted to the hospital with premature labor at 20 weeks into my pregnancy. I stayed there for 3 months before delivering our son at the gestational age of 32 weeks, 4 days. Not knowing when I was actually going to deliver, this book explained everything one should expect at all stages of a pre-term delivery, beginning from 26 weeks through 34+ weeks. It covers reasons for premature labor and delivery, surgeries and drugs administered for premature labor, surviving bedrest/hospitalization, delivery, EVERYTHING to expect in a NICU, the differences between pre-term and full-term babies, bringing your preemie home, and their development during the chilhood years. Although I was not having twins, etc. myself, the book also includes a lot of great information on multiples. After reading and understanding the types of monitors and machinery my baby may have needed at each stage, I felt much better knowing WHY these things were attached to our son when he was born. My husband and I also took a tour of the NICU at our hospital (which I highly recommend!)so that it was much less of a shock when we found ourselves there after delivery. This book was right on the money, and we got to see everything they talked about hands-on. This is an excellent book to help anyone conquer the fears, worries and misconceptions of having a premature infant (and it also comes highly recommended from the nurses and neonatologists of our NICU as well!)

These vocab. books perfect for homeschool!
By LSNelson
I got this vocabulary book at our local junior college bookstore for my middle school student to use. It is wonderful, and now I am looking at the others in the series. Sort of series anyway. It says this is for the highest reading level books, but my 7th grader has no problems with any of the reading or vocab. words. They are mostly new words to her. I would hope college students would be able to do this with no problem. The chapters are short, we finish one a week, and varied, like music, or theater, or history, etc. They are set up so you can do a lesson a day for maybe 4 days a week. The only odd thing is their analogies, which we skip, not like most analogies and without a teacher guide I do not know what they are looking for. That is only once every few chapters anyway. Oh, and it is strange to have to match a photo to a vocabulary word that really isn't something concrete that can be pictured!

Great for home school though.

Review
"This book is really a very much-needed text and reference book which is not only immensely helpful for physical anthropologists, but also for general biologists and anatomists working on the development of the human skeleton. ...The book can whole-heartedly be recommended..."
―M. Schultz for AUXOLOGIE (2002)
"The text is informative and well written, and makes fluent reading. This book will become a standard reference text and should be available not only in departments of archaeology and anthropology, but also to paediatric clinicians, radiologists and lawyers."
―Christine Hall in THE JOURNAL OF BONE AND JOINT SURGERY (April 2001)
"Scheuer and Black have produced a much-needed reference text where previously there was mostly a void. These authors have invested heavily in researching the literature as well as museum collections in order to create Developmental Juvenile Osteology. Anyone who works with human skeletal remains in any context would greatly benefit from having this text as part of his or her library."
―Lee Meadows Jantz, University of Tennessee, in AMERICAN JOURNAL OF PHYSICAL ANTHROPOLOGY (2001)
"It is without doubt a worthy addition to the field of anatomy and should be a strong 'must have' for anyone interested in the growing human, whether from a clinical, forensic or archeological point of view. It should also find an indispensable place on the shelves of libraries and institutions where teaching and understanding of human anatomy is an important component of any courses and their specification or curricula."
―Peter Dangerfield, Liverpool University, in JOURNAL OF ANATOMY (2001)
"...a welcome, long overdue contribution... The greatest achievement of this book is the combination of its unusual level of detail, top-quality illustrative material, and methodologies the authors have developed themselves, or wisely culled (and adapted) from fellow researchers. ...the book is unsurpassed in its handling of the complex anatomy of the young individual. ...an essential volume for archaeologists and physical anthropologists in the field..."
―Yoel Rak, Tel Aviv University, in JOURNAL OF HUMAN EVOLUTION (2001)
"This book should be in every medical and anthropological library."
―Edgar F. Allin, DOODY'S HEALTH SCIENCES BOOK REVIEW JOURNAL (2001)

From the Back Cover
The correct identification of the skeletal components of the juvenile skeleton is critical to the analysis of human remains. Without such information it is impossible to establish the number of individuals represented or to ascertain their age at death. Until now there has been no text solely dedicated to the development of the juvenile skeleton. For the first time this book by Louise Scheuer and Sue Black brings together information from the vast and widely dispersed anthropological and medical literature. It is aimed primarily at physical anthropologists, archaeologists and forensic pathologists but should prove of interest to a much wider scientific and clinical readership.
The introductory chapters deal with the basic principles involved in deducing age from juvenile skeletal samples and in the development of bone as a tissue. The main part of the book describes each bone, first in its adult state and then its development from the earliest embryological stage to maturity. The individual sections are fully referenced and profusely illustrated with superb new drawings of bones at successive stages of development. Each section closes with "Practical Notes", which summarize previous information, describe how to side and distinguish a bone from others of a similar morphology and give detailed metrics from documented sources.
Any scientist interested in human skeletal biology will find this an essential text. It will prove to be invaluable in the laboratory, to identify and age juvenile bones, and in the library, as a basis for further study of any part of the human skeleton.

Very Informative
By CB
I am writing to disagree with the reviewer who said that the book has too much text. It is the lengthy description and explanation that makes this book worth having! The book isn't simply for identification of skeletal remains, but for understanding the developmental processes of the skeleton (as well as some extras, such as why a feature may be particularly important in skeletal analysis, or the history of studying such-and-such bone, etc.). I think it succeeds in this.

In my opinion, the best part of this textbook is its enormous bibliography. For many classes it has helped me find much more relevant sources than PubMed and the like. I have heard a few say that they have found some faulty information in the text of the book, but that is what the bibliography is for (I never trust textbooks 100%, anyway).

A must-have reference book
By A Customer
This is a first rate holistic treatment of sub-adult osteology. The text covers the entire juvenile skeleton. Chapters contain drawings of each skeletal element, descriptions of growth, unique developmental attributes and in some cases, illustration of the element through different growth stages to see the sequence of changes of the bone up to adulthood.
The usefulness of this text is comparable to Tim White's Human Osteology. The White book uses extensive real life photos with text description and predominantly covers adult morphology. This juvenile osteology book craftfully uses hand drawings and color illustration to depict the skeleton and muscle attachments. Although it may seem pricely, this is a must-have reference book for those students and researchers interested in human osteology, growth and development, forensics and comparative anatomy.

Needs more...
By Christine
I disagree with the many reviews which compare this text to White's Human Osteology. While there is no doubt that the text is informative and the treatment of the subject thorough, Scheuer's text lacks enough illustrations to make it worth the buy for practical use in identifying fragmented juvenile or infant remains. White's text provides at least one photo and description of each bone, usually from every angle. When Scheuer releases a second addition, with far less text, and more photos or illustrations for osteologists who do not have access to a skeletal collection of juvenile and infant bones, then it will be worth the buy.

The Beginning Translator's Workbook: Or the ABC of French to English Translation, by Michele H. Jones

This workbook combines methodology and practice for use in a course for beginning translators with a proficiency in French ranging from intermediate to advanced level. It takes a linguistic approach to the problems of translation in addressing common and major pitfalls: delineation of 'translation units' or what constitutes a concept beyond mere words, word polysemy, false cognates, structural and cultural obstacles to literal translation. It offers chapter by chapter explanations of the various strategies used by professional translators to counter these problems: the translation devices known as transposition, modulation, equivalence, and adaptation. Each chapter concludes with a variety of practice exercises focusing on one specific problem. The second part of the book is a global application of all the principles taught in the first part and guides the student step by step through the actual translation of a choice of literary (prose, poetry, and plays) and non-literary excerpts.

Comprehensive guide to translating French to English
By A Customer
This is the only book of which I am aware that provides comprehensive and specific advice concerning the difficult assignment of translating French to English. It not only offers principles and precepts but it also offers outstanding examples of possible translations. The focus is not on literal translation but rather focues on the process of making the translation into English that mirrors the author's original design. The recently issued softcover edition makes this a must buy for any advanced student of french.

A Workbook With No Answer Key ?
By aglia
I purchased this book in order to do a self-study of french to english translation. Though the book seems to have many good exercises, there is no answer key to the exercises in the book. I don't know how one is supposed to utilize the exercises if no answers are given. I emailed the publisher (The University Press in Lanham, MD) several times before they responded that they do not have an answer key on file. Thus I feel like the book was a real waste of money. Also, I read in another review that this book would be good for a translator of any language. I disagree, the focus of the book is french, and I think a non-french speaker will not find it very useful.
