This is the first serious biography of a man widely considered one of Texas’—and America’s—greatest songwriters. Like Jimmie Rodgers, Woody Guthrie, Robert Johnson, and Hank Williams, Townes Van Zandt was the embodiment of that mythic American figure, the troubled troubadour. A Deeper Blue traces Van Zandt’s background as the scion of a prominent Texas family; his troubled early years and his transformation from promising pre-law student to wandering folk singer; his life on the road and the demons that pursued and were pursued by him; the women who loved and inspired him; and the brilliance and enduring beauty of his songs, which are explored in depth. The author draws on eight years’ extensive research and interviews with Townes’ family and closest friends and colleagues. He looks beyond the legend and paints a colorful portrait of a complex man who embraced the darkness of demons and myth as well as the light of deep compassion and humanity, all “for the sake of the song.”

Review
"A Deeper Blue ... gives fascinating insight into what inspired this sweet‑singing, tortured genius and what inevitably brought him down. His songs stirred the soul and seemed to well from its darkest depths. He became the patron saint of many a Texas songwriter in his day and will continue to inspire for generations to come. Save a tear for Townes. You'll need it." -- Joe Ely
"Hardy delineates the musician's chaotic life in honest, often dramatic detail, but always brings the attention and focus back to Van Zandt's music and the classic songs he penned.... Steering through the myths and legends, the author depicts a troubled individual and gifted artist who inspired many singers and songwriters in the alternative country scene." -- Billboard
"Hardy's sparkling new biography of the tragic, magic life of Townes Van Zandt is a must‑read for anyone who loves music or likes to raise hell. A Deeper Blue demonstrates why Van Zandt has become Texas' version of Mozart, Van Gogh, and Hank Williams all rolled up into one brilliant and beautiful burrito." -- Kinky Friedman
"Honest, unbiased look at the troubled career and existence of one of America's greatest songwriters.... A poignant, clear and vivid portrait." -- Kirkus Reviews
Hardy's book carefully documents many of the facets of this gem of a life. His love for the music shines through, just as the spirit of Townes shines through each song." -- Kathleen Hudson, founder of the Texas Heritage Music Foundation
From the Publisher

Read it if you need to, listen because you must...
By J. Williams
I recall the first time I heard Poncho and Lefty and immediately picked up the cover to see who wrote it. Townes Van Zandt. That was the beginning of my appreciation for his talents. The book is probably a must read for many, it was for me and it certainly told me a lot about the man and his life. That said, it went on way too long. One reviewer referred to a slow motion train wreck and maybe that's a good way to put it. Since most of his time was spent drinking and drugging himself to death, the detailed account becomes both morbid and repetitive. A songwriter and troubadour's itinerant life may make for some fine music but sometimes does not make for a prolonged read. Repeating the lyrics along with explanations probably reveals more about the author than the songwriter. That said, the writing is thorough and appears balanced and I read it in one sitting on a long overnight flight to Nairobi. Townes's music stands on its own and reading about him doesn't turn on more lights - that day I first heard Poncho and Lefty was enough...and listening to his tunes still is...although I don't fault the author for the often-sad tale he had to tell. That was the story.

Well written and engaging

I read this book with the hope of getting some insight into the personality and songwriting skills of Townes Van Zandt. Many great songwriters praise his work and cite him as inspiration in their own craft. As a songwriter myself, I was seeking to know the qualities he had that made him so good. I thought the author did a great job of balancing his life story with his musical journey. It is my opinion that many times a biographical author will get so caught up in the details (drugs, alcohol, romances, etc.) that the songwriting and music takes a lower level of importance in the story. Hardy seemed to keep it in the forefront even as he masterfully told the life (and death) story of Townes without ignoring the details mentioned. His presentation of the many people (family, friends, wives, children, performers, and fans) and the roles they played in Townes' life was weaved into the story much like in a novel. It is apparent that he had some kind of bi-polar disorder in a time when this was not very well understood. Sometimes I hated Townes as I read, other times I absolutely thought he was the most genuine, giving, and likable person.
There is truly a lot of information on his songs and many lyrics, which was great for me. I found it helpful to go to You Tube when a particular song was talked about in the book. There are many wonderful postings there that gives the listener a good impression of Townes' body of work. Look for the live videos. You can see the gradual degradation in his singing voice and guitar playing as he ages and progresses in his alcoholism. Still, the words of his songs are for the most part... well, truth.

A deeper blue
By Kevin Petersen
This was an excellent book. Exactly what I was looking for in wanting to know more about townes van zandt, his life, what made him tick. It was meticulously researched and it comes thorugh in the writing. There is plenty of insight and anecdotes. I'd elaborate, but instead I'll just say read it if you're interested.
I do have one major gripe with the author. After establishing from the beginning of the book that Townes wanted the meaning of his songs to be interpreted by the listener, that they could mean different things to different people (which is what good poetry should do), Hardy goes on to give these readings of the song that border on pompous. He doesn't say, "this is my view of the song," he says "this is what townes was saying when he wrote it," and nine times out of ten this isn't based on anything. The book was well researched, but rarely did townes ever come out and say, "this is what this line means," so i think it is pretty audacious of the author to presume he is the authority on how to read into his lyrics. The book is still worth reading, but whenever the song interpretations came in I would get very annoyed and sometimes have to skip those sections.
